Floyd's Lament

By Jerry Nelson
August 14, 1998

Floyd's Lament is the poem I wrote and read at Jim Henson's Memorial.  I knew and worked with Jim from 1965 until his death, and still work for the Henson Company as a Muppeteer.

I had a calligrapher letter the poem and then had it printed on silk paper.  These I gave to many of Jim's friends and family.

earless Leader
Doctor Dog
toothsome piano man
playing your joyous song of
is, was, and will be
remembering always the fun silly
"poke poke poke Bert, hee hee hee"

earless Leader
Mister hands open wide
sharing insights of joy and love
here! will you sip? will you feast?
there is plenty for all

earless Leader
whim of steel
you've convinced me, Convincing John
Cantis, I hear your magic flute
whispering and echoing
through the caves of my imagination

earless Leader
green flippered gentleness
fill my dreams with your visions
of unexplored possibilities
shine on, shine on
eternally bright in our hearts
and minds
Fearless Leader
